Love Food, North Pennine Dales - supporting our rural local producers and food-related businesses. Your guide to great local food and local produce in the North Pennine Dales.
Quick, tasty & cheap was the theme of a special cookery course held at Love Food's test kitchen at Woodleigh for young people from the Teesdale YMCA. The course, taught by Jane Sammells, Curriculum Kitchen, was to show how basic meals could be prepared, using fresh ingredients and minimal equipment, to help youngsters beome more self sufficient when setting out on their own.
Lessons in creating dishes from India, Pakistan, Mexico and China were delivered by chef Naila Laundy in the Love Food kitchen at Woodleigh. There was huge enthusiasm for the classes and Naila showed that you can cook less traditional food and still use a lot of local produce.

The sun shone as Apple Day was celebrated with a host of activities organised by Love Food. We even had a "mobile apple" walking around the town to attract people to our event venue at Scar Top! Our Apple Day was organised to coincide with the monthly farmers' market which also organised apple related activities - including a treasure hunt and a chance to win a luxury hamper containing some apple related products.
Angela Whiting, Love Food project leader who organised the event said "We put together as many activities as possible for both adults and children, including baking activities for the youngsters, and we had a really good response"
Activities included making apple crumbles and toffee apples, apple related games, craft activities and stalls and some "specials" - apple identification and apple pressing.
There was apple "bobbing" with a difference - no water involved!
We had a specially made "Apple" shy
Veg Out in Barney (Barnard Castle Rotary Club) organised apple craft activities for children and young at heart adults.
Folk were able to bring along their own apples and containers to press their own personal juices......
.....and able to bring their garden apples along for identification by apple identification expert Clifford Cain of Fruitscape who brought along his display of 80 different varieties of apples.
The event was supported by cafe Number 15 selling their apple-based vinegar, chutney, muffins and cakes, Fruitful Durham with their jams, jellies and juices, Barnard Castle Rotary Club with their pram full of "Fruitful Characters" and their Veg Out in Barney stall, plus a hog roast - complete with apple sauce - run by chef/restaurateur Andrew Rowbotham.
